VA Awards Grant to California Veterans Home

June 14, 2006

WASHINGTON – Making sure the State Veterans Home in Yountville remains a comfortable residence for veterans, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is targeting more than $807,000 in grant money for improvements to the state home.

"This grant honors our commitment to care for the men and women of California who have served in uniform," said the Honorable R. James Nicholson, Secretary of Veterans Affairs.  "Our federal-state partnership helps to provide comfortable housing for California veterans."

The grant will pay up to 65 percent of the cost for general renovations at the home, including a new chiller for the facility’s air conditioning system.  The overall cost of the project is approximately $1.24 million. The home provides skilled nursing care to about 1,110 veterans.

In fiscal year 2005, VA spent nearly $6 billion in California to serve more than 2.3 million veterans.  In California, VA operates 10 major medical centers, 49 outpatient clinics, 11 nursing homes, 21 Vet Centers and six national cemeteries.
