Congress advocates support for ‘Hire a Veteran Week’ and
commends those caring for our veterans in state veterans homes
H. Con. Res. 125, expressing support for the creation and purpose of “Hire a Veteran Week,” and
H. Con. Res. 345, honoring the National Association of State Veterans Homes and the 119 state veterans homes providing long-term care to veterans, passed the House

Washington, D.C. — Today, the House passed Concurrent Resolution 125, which expresses support for the designation and goals of “Hire a Veteran Week” by encouraging employers across the country to hire veterans returning home from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The bill also seeks a presidential proclamation in support of the event.

“No group in America deserves special employment opportunities more than our veterans. Today’s veterans bring a solid work ethic and are highly motivated. Hiring a veteran to fill a good-paying job is an important way to say “thank you for your service” and brings a quality employee to the workforce,” said Rep. Jeb Bradley, (R-N.H.).

The bill also acknowledges that the VA, Department of Labor, the Office of Personnel Management, and State and local governments already have programs which ensure that veterans receive the services they are entitled to and that employer interest in hiring veterans exists.

The House also passed House Concurrent Resolution 345, which honors the National Association of State Veterans Homes by recognizing those who work in state veterans homes across the nation, commending their contributions to the care of elderly and disabled veterans. It also acknowledges the partnership between VA and the states and affirms the support of Congress in the continuation of this program.

“As the number of elderly veterans rises, state veterans homes continue to improve and sustain their health by assuring access to affordable and quality nursing care,” said Rep. Bradley.

State veterans homes provide more than 50 percent of the total national long-term care bed capacity for veterans at an average daily cost that is significantly less than nursing homes operated by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Chairman Buyer praised Congressman Simmons for honoring those who are committed to caring for our veterans by introducing H. Con. Res. 345.
