Statement by Chairman Steve Buyer on the departure of VA Under Secretary for Health Dr. Jonathan Perlin

On behalf of the committee, I extend appreciation to Dr. Jonathan Perlin for his record of service to America’s veterans and their families, which culminated in his appointment by President Bush as under secretary for health at the Department of Veterans Affairs and his service as chief executive officer of the nation’s largest health care system.

Dr. Perlin is commended for his commitment to the continued improvement of the veterans’ health care system, which has earned its place as a national leader of quality care.

Under Dr. Perlin’s leadership and focus on performance management, VA’s health care system received accolades for innovation and continues to outperform much of the private sector for quality, safety and customer satisfaction. Demonstrating the impact of his leadership, VA’s electronic health record system won the 2006 “Innovations in American Government Award” sponsored by Harvard University.

As Dr. Perlin joins the private sector, he goes with our high regard and best wishes.
