A LOOK BACK: U.S. MILITARY HUMAN EXPERIMENTATION

Edgewood Arsenal Medical Volunteer Handbook and 1994 GAO report reveal the dark side of human experiments.

by Larry Scott, VA Watchdog dot Org

-------------------------

Thanks to a couple of regular VA Watchdog dot Org readers for providing this great information.

Thanks to E. for the Medical Volunteer Handbook from Edgewood Arsenal, 1968.

Edgewood Arsenal at the Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland "hosted" medical experiments for many years.

Their use of "volunteers" has always been questioned because many of those "volunteers" said they were not properly informed of what was being given to (or done to) them.

The Handbook makes for interesting reading because it is just like many other "welcome to your new fort" handbooks used by the military.

The Handbook contains some very generic indication of the dangers awaiting the "volunteers."

In the section titled "The Testing Program" the "volunteers" are told:

"The research program itself consists of a wide variety of tests.  These include tests of chemical agents that may affect a person either mentally or physically..."

The "volunteers" at Edgewood didn't find out until years later what they might have been exposed to.

In 1994, the GAO (then the General Accounting Office, now the Government Accountability Office) presented testimony to Congress that painted a more complete picture.

About Edgewood Arsenal:

"From 1952 to 1975, the Army conducted a classified medical research program to develop incapacitating agents.  The program involved testing nerve agents, nerve agent antidotes, psychochemicals and irritants.  The chemicals were given to volunteer service members at the Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland, and four other locations."

The testimony goes into great detail about other testing programs, as well ... and it does not paint a pretty picture.  Thanks to M. for this GAO testimony.
