SIGN OF THE TIMES: VETERANS PITCH IN TO MAKE UP

COUNTY BUDGET CUT AT VETS' OFFICE -- "Veterans

Services is a passion of mine, I thought if they could

receive donations to make up that loss, we should do so."

This could have been a "bad news" story... but it turned into a "good news" story when Brother veterans opened their hearts and their wallets.

In these difficult times, we need to watch out for our Brother and Sister vets.  There are many in need... and, I feel, it's our responsibility to step in and make sure we leave none behind.

To all who donated to help keep the vets' office running... ATTABOY!

Veterans pitch in to help Department of Veterans Services

MOLLY K. DEWITT

When Larry Woods read in The Daily News that Onslow County's Department of Veterans Services was feeling the pinch after having to return $1,025 to the county as part of budget cuts, he did something about it.

Woods, the veterans services supervisor at the Employment Security Commission in Jacksonville and a veteran himself, took up a collection at his office and brought the collected donation of more than $200 to the Department of Veterans Services.

He said the effort was about "community responsibility."

"We're in an economic hard time, revenues have slowed down across the nation," Woods said. "Veterans Services is a passion of mine, I thought if they could receive donations to make up that loss, we should do so."

Woods wasn't the only one who felt the need lend a hand. An anonymous veteran wrote a personal check for $1,500 and the department also received a donation of various office supplies.

"I was really surprised. My phone started ringing when we got here (Thursday) morning with veterans offering to do things if we needed help," said Amelia Grissett, director of the Department of Veterans Services. "It was like Christmas almost, and it was just people that wanted to make sure they had a part in assisting with doing what they could for veterans in the area."

Grissett said the donations will enable the department to finish out the current fiscal year with ease.

"It was a difficult thing for me to give that amount of money back, knowing that we would be very, very tight; however, I had no idea that it would pour out to readers that way," she said. "It puts us in a better position. It was just overwhelming that veterans saw a need and just stepped right in, and non veterans as well."

Angela Cole, Onslow County's deputy manager, said the donations were "wonderful" and "surprising."

"They were really shocked, but they were all so excited because they're a small department. They don't get a lot of notoriety and they don't get big grants, but they help a lot of folks," she said. "So it was a wonderful response and testament to all the care and concern they show for their clients."

The entire experience was humbling for Grissett.

"I was just so humbled by it and thought it was just a real testament to the kinds of veterans and people that we have in Onslow County," she said.
