The economic "downturn" is really beginning to hit veterans' services in many states.

I have lived through a number of "recessions" in my life, but nothing like this.

Now, with massive layoffs and crashing property values, local, county and state governments have to provide more services but are collecting less tax revenue.  Can't be done.  Something's got to give... some services have to be cut... and veterans are going to get hurt.

So we see little stories like the one below.

County's veterans offices shut Fridays due to budget

Due to budget constraints, El Dorado County's Department of Veteran Affairs will be closed on six Fridays through the end of June.

To help close a budget gap caused by declining property and sales
tax revenues, the Board of Supervisors approved furloughs for employees in several county departments, including Veteran Affairs.

As a result, the Placerville office at 130 Placerville Drive, Suite B, will be closed March 13, April 3 and 24, May 15 and June 5 and 26. The office will remain open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. all other weekdays, except county holidays.

The South Lake Tahoe office is open from 9:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

For more information, call the department at (530) 621-5892 or see the Web site at www.edcgov.us/veterans .
