The Department of Veterans'
Affairs ( VA ) is maintaining
their silence about the increasing number of veterans testing
positive for deadly viruses after being exposed to possibly
contaminated endoscopic equipment.
From the day this information
became public, VA has lawyered-up:
"There's no way to scientifically, conclusively prove
they contracted this
[HIV or hepatitis] due to treatment at our
facility." VA
spokesperson
But, tell that to the 53
veterans who now have active cases of hepatitis B, hepatitis C or
HIV.
Next
week ( Tuesday, June 16 ) we will learn more as many VA officials
have been called on the carpet and will testify before the
Subcommittee on
Oversight and Investigations of the
House Committee on Veterans'
Affairs.
The hearing will be at 10:30am (
Eastern ) and will NOT be webcast. I am told, however, that
a live audio feed will be available.
Information on who will be
testifying and a link to the audio feed
can be found on this page. Prepared testimony will also
be available for viewing and download when the Subcommittee gets
around to posting it.
Expect a lot of media attention
to this hearing and to the hearing that the
Senate Committee on
Veterans' Affairs will hold on
June 24.
To monitor the infection numbers
at the three affected VA facilities, go to the
VA's home page. In the
upper right corner, click on
Endoscopic Report. Then you will find active links to
the facilities:
Then, you have to do the math
and add up the three pages.
To make that easier, we have
inserted below the latest information from the three facilities.
