Yesterday we reported a new date for the Congressional hearing on "Document Tampering and Mishandling at the Veterans Benefits Administration."  All document mishandling and VA shredder information is here...

The hearing will be on Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at 1:30PM (EST) in Room 334 Cannon House Office Building .  A live Web cast is expected.  Web cast page is here... info in upper left corner of the page...

Now, there's a new twist.  This will be a Joint Vets' Subcommittee hearing.

It was originally scheduled to be a hearing before the Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs.  That Subcommittee will now be joined by the The Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations.

This is explained by a Capitol Hill staffer:

It’s not unusual for there to be joint hearings. O&I has little legislative jurisdiction, so they typically latch onto other subcommittees. For the most part, anything that goes wrong in the VA falls under the purview of O&I, because they execute the oversight.

There are no real advantages / disadvantages to this aside from the fact that there will be more people aware and following up, which is usually a good thing.

We do not have a witness list at this time, but it is expected that we will hear from the VA's Office of Inspector General about some recent investigations into document mishandling.

Below are descriptions of the two Subcommittees participating in the hearing.

---------------

Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs

Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs, which shall have legislative, oversight and investigative jurisdiction over compensation; general and special pensions of all the wars of the United States; life insurance issued by the Government on account of service in the Armed Forces; cemeteries of the United States in which veterans of any war or conflict are or may be buried, whether in the United States or abroad, except cemeteries administered by the Secretary of the Interior; burial benefits; the Board of Veterans Appeals; and the Court of Appeals for Veterans' Claims.

---------------

Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations

The Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations has oversight and investigative jurisdiction over veterans’ matters generally and such other matters as may be referred to the Subcommittee by the Chairman of the full Committee. The Subcommittee provides oversight on programs and operations of the Department of Veterans Affairs, as well as those of other federal agencies that pertain to veterans. In carrying out its responsibilities, the Subcommittee conducts hearings, site visits, and investigations nationwide. The Subcommittee’s legislative jurisdiction is over such bills or resolutions as may be referred to it by the Chairman of the full Committee.
