A few days ago we reported that the Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs would hold a hearing titled:  Document Tampering and Mishandling at the Veterans Benefits Administration.

All VA shredder and document mishandling  information is here...

Now, the date for that hearing has been changed.

The Subcommittee will meet on Tuesday, March 3 at 1:30PM (EST) in room 334 of the Cannon House Office Building.

It is expected that the hearing will be available on a live Web cast.

We do not have a witness list yet but that information should be available soon.

The VA's Office of Inspector General is expected to have input into the hearing and may release a report prior to that time.

Since the Chairman of the Subcommittee is Rep. John Hall (D-NY) it is expected that we will hear about the problems with document handling at the New York Regional Office.

How bad were the problems in New York.

On October 22, 2008, the New York State Division of Veterans' Affairs held a Counselor Refresher Training Seminar at Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh, NY. Early in the meeting a New York VARO representative, who gave his name as John B., said problems found by VAOIG were improper entry dates on documents and improper procedures. John B. stated 20,000 pieces of mail were not opened and paperwork files were not collated or properly attended to.

This should be a lively hearing, to say the least... and we'll have more details about who will testify as that information becomes available.

The Committee's hearings page is here...
