Veterans Commission opposes Scotland School closing

HARRISBURG -- The State Veterans Commission is opposed to the closing of Scotland School for Veterans' Children.

The commission agreed last week to send a letter to the governor and to the General Assembly opposing the elimination of funding to the Scotland School.

Rep. Russ Fairchild, chairman of the House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee, today applauded commission members for their stance. A Republican and Vietnam veteran, Fairchild represents Snyder and Union counties. The school, open to the relatives of military veterans, is run by the state Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.

"It is inherently unfair to compare the Scotland School - which provides 24-hour, seven-day-a-week care to hundreds of students - to other schools," Fairchild said. "The campus may not be fancy and include all the very latest in technology and equipment, but the students receive a tremendous education from a staff that has become their family. The value of the Scotland School is very hard to put a price tag on, especially considering alumni are judges, university professors, entrepreneurs, and West Point graduates."

The State Veterans Commission includes members of the VFW, the American Legion, AMVETS, Blinded Veterans Association, Catholic War Veterans of the United States of America, Disabled American Veterans, Jewish War Veterans of the United States, Marine Corps League, Military Order of the Purple Heart, State Association of the County Directors of Veterans' Affairs, Veterans of World War I of the United States of America Inc., Italian-American War Veterans of the United States Inc., Vietnam Veterans of America Inc., American Ex-Prisoners of War and the Keystone Paralyzed Veterans Association.

According to a recent survey at the school, more than 70 percent of Scotland's graduates furthered their education in college and 15 percent enlisted in the armed forces.

The school is "one of the gems" in the state's educational system, Fairchild said.

"Let's take a look at eliminating funding for sports stadiums or millions of dollars in tax credits for Hollywood film companies that have produced little in the way of sustainable, long-term employment," Fairchild said.

Fairchild's list of potential slashes -- $45 million given by the administration to a professional soccer stadium in the Philadelphia suburbs and $75 million set aside for tax credits for Hollywood film producers last year. The $120 million spent on two programs alone in 2008 - in addition to the $75 million more proposed for the tax credit in the next fiscal year - would more than fund the Scotland School for nearly 15 years, he said.
