SIGN OF THE TIMES: OHIO COUNTY VETERANS' OFFICE RUNS

OUT OF MONEY -- Economic woes: In Harrison County, there is

not enough money to pay the workers and keep the office open.

The very short story below is a look at things to come.

As we move into tougher economic times, we will see more of this.

Veterans' programs will be trimmed at the local, county and state levels.

A few days ago we had this story about New York State cutting benefits to blind veterans... here...

nfsep08/nf093008-5.htm

A number of vets have written me asking if their compensation is in jeopardy.  NO IT IS NOT!!!  Your compensation is part of the mandatory budget and is secure.

But, what we will most likely see in the next few years is fewer local, county and state veterans' programs... cuts in the ones that already exist... and, potentially, cuts in federal programs, as well.

Be sure to watch the video of this story at the link below.  It contains more information than the printed article.

Veterans Office Runs Out Of Money

A board member with the Veterans Service Office in Harrison County says there is not enough money to pay the workers and keep the office open.

Jim Thompson said it has been an ongoing battle with commissioners, from reducing their budget, to not having enough money to meet its payroll.

Commissioner Mike Vinka said the county does not have any money for the veterans office, but the commissioners will explore other ways of finding funds.

Thompson said he will meet with veteran's service commission board soon to see if they can keep the office open while the search for funding continues.
