NOTE:  There are two updates at the bottom of the page.

This situation has gone from ridiculous to downright absurd.

First, House Vets' Chair Bob Filner (D-CA) was going to hold a hearing on the VA shredder scandal.  Story here...
http://www.vawatchdog.org/08/nf08/nf
oct08/nf102308-7.htm

Filner said it would be titled:  Shredding Our Confidence in the VA.

Then, he changed his mind and decided not to hold a hearing but a "roundtable discussion" instead.  Story here...
http://www.vawatchdog.org/08/nf08/
nfnov08/nf111408-3.htm

Then, a Committee spokesperson told me the "discussion" would not be recorded or webcast.  Story here...
http://www.vawatchdog.org/08/nf08/
nfnov08/nf111408-7.htm

Within a few hours of that story being posted, another Committee spokesperson called me and said the "discussion" would be recorded and would have an audio webcast... and maybe even a video webcast if the TV cameras could be reinstalled in the hearing room following remodeling.  Story here...
http://www.vawatchdog.org/08/nf08/
nfnov08/nf111408-8.htm

So, where do we stand now?

Who the hell knows!

The promised announcement of the "discussion" is not posted on the Committee's site anywhere.

Not on the calendar...
http://veterans.house.gov/

Not on press releases...
http://veterans.house.gov/news/

Not under hearings...
http://veterans.house.gov/hearings/

Not mentioned on schedule...
http://veterans.house.gov/schedule/

This info is accurate as of 2033HRS EST, MON 17 NOV 2008... and I doubt anyone is hanging around the Committee office waiting to update the website in the middle of the night.

In an email sent out today, but not posted on the Committee's website, Filner outlined the schedule for the week.  On Tuesday there's a hearing on the New G.I. Bill implementation.

And, then there's this cryptic entry:

Wednesday, November 19 at 10 a.m. – 334 Cannon House Office Building

House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Roundtable

Discussion on Issues Concerning Our Veterans

Participants will include representatives from the Department of Veterans Affairs and veterans service organizations.

This is a public meeting.

What?  See anything about shredding?  See anything about mishandled documents?

I am getting a very bad feeling about this so-called "discussion."

NOTE:  There is an update below.  Disregard boxed info as it is dated.

I encourage you to call the Committee and let your feelings be known.

Let them know this "discussion" MUST be recorded and MUST be webcast.

The number is:  (202) 225-9756

You have your marching orders

1ST UPDATE, TUE 18 NOV 2008, 1117HRS EST:

The Committee has now assured us that the "roundtable discussion" on shredding and document handling will be recorded and webcast.

And, I noticed that the cameras are up and running in the hearing room, so this should be a video webcast.

But, the question still persists:  Why isn't this information posted on the Committee's website for all to see?

2ND UPDATE, TUE A8 NOV 2008, 1309 HRS EST:

The Committee has finally posted a link to the VA document mishandling and shredder "roundtable."

Go to this page...
http://veterans.house.gov/

The link is in the upper left-hand corner.

Note that the "roundtable" is posted as "Roundtable Discussion on Issues Concerning Our Veterans."  No mention of mishandled documents or shredders.

This is being done for two reasons: 1. To keep the number of viewers down.  2. To NOT alert the press to the real subject of the "roundtable."

In the view of the VA (and obviously a view shared by Filner) the fewer eyes and ears the better.
