Maybe it's time to inject just a touch of humor into the VA shredder / mishandled document story.

A recent visitor to the VA's Regional Office in Indianapolis reported seeing this sign in a prominently-displayed glassed-in bulletin board.

VA employee injured October 23, 2008 when he tripped over a stack of c-files. Please be careful when walking amongst the stacks on the floor.

I called the VARO to find out how badly the employee had been injured and how many piles of files were lying on the floor.

The Service Center manager refused to talk about the incident but forwarded my request for information to the Public Affairs Office.

Sometime later, the PAO left me a voice mail.  I was told that all such information had to be cleared by VA's Central Office and that she would "type up" my request and forward it.  Forward it how?  Email?  Or, snail mail?  I would guess the latter.

Think I'll hear from Central Office on this?  Don't count on it.

Although I'm sorry a VA employee was injured, I can't help but get this vivid picture in my mind of employees having to fight their way through piles of paper to get to their desks.

And, then again, maybe this isn't humorous if it's an accurate picture of how files are handled at the Indianapolis VARO.
