VA patient alleges verbal abuse by hospital police

Tampa, Florida – Three hospital policemen have been placed on leave following allegations they verbally abused a patient at the James A. Haley VA Hospital.

The incident occurred at the hospital April 14th and was reported by the patient two weeks later, according to Nevin Weaver, Network Director of the Department of Veterans Affairs VA Sunshine Network.

The names of the patient and officers have not been disclosed.

“VA is treating this complaint with the utmost seriousness,” Weaver said in a statement, “and will act immediately and appropriately to discipline employees and to protect the rights and safety of our patients, should that become necessary.”

The patient had been taken into custody at the hospital for being disruptive, and was being held for transfer to Tampa Police when the incident occurred, said spokesman John Pickens.

The charge against the patient was later dropped by the state attorney's office, he said.

Surveillance video of the incident will be used by a board of investigators to determine what actually occurred, if there were violations of patient rights and, if so, what actions would be taken against the officers.

Pickens stressed the patient alleged he received verbal abuse only. There were no claims of physical abuse.
