WHITE HOUSE URGES CUTS ELSEWHERE TO OFFSET INCREASED VA SPENDING -- The White House said if Congress exceeds Bush's request for funding the VA without offsetting the increases with reductions in other spending bills, "the president will veto any of the other bills that exceed his request."
This is a bad message. And, it's a wrong message. What the White House is saying is that they will have to TAKE money from other programs to pay for veterans' programs. This is nonsense! This country has the money to fund the programs passed by Congress. The White House is just putting arbitrary limits on spending...and somebody is going to suffer because of that. And, it's a good way to play veterans off against other segments of the population by saying, "We wanted to give you more, but the veterans took it." hopes to complete work on the bill “in a very expeditious manner,” so
that he can call up the State-Foreign Operations spending measure (HR
2764) later this week. The measure would provide $64.7 billion in discretionary funding, $4 billion more than the president requested. -------------------------
