Man sentenced for embezzlement at veterans hospital

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - The U.S. Attorneys office says a man has been sentenced in federal court for embezzling money from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

William Carroll, a resident of Anchorage, was sentenced in federal court in Anchorage this week to 18 months in prison with 9 months to be served in half way house for his conviction theft and embezzlement of government funds.

Chief United States District Court Judge John W. Sedwick imposed the sentence on Carroll.

The Department of Justice says the 47-year-old Carroll took more than $163,000 in cash from the cash drawer at the medical center between 2001 and 2005.

Lawyers say he concealed his activities by replacing the funds with reimbursement checks received from insurance claims.

Carroll was the primary agent cashier at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Anchorage.
