Spokane VA hospital extends urgent care one year after vet's

VA urgent care now available 24 hours

Janet O
KXLY4 Reporter

SPOKANE -- The urgent care center at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in northwest Spokane has expanded its hours, one year after a man died when he arrived after the center closed.

The Emergency Department will now be open 24-hours a day, seven days a week, starting on Sunday.

It isn’t an emergency room, but provides other non-emergency services to the 22,000 veterans in Eastern Washington, North Idaho and Western Montana.

The opening comes one year to the day after Clinton Fuller died after arriving at the center five minutes after it had closed at 4:30 p.m.

There was a large outcry after Fuller’s death about the reduction of hours at the urgent care center, which happened in July of 2006.

This outcry led to the increased funding to extend the operating hours.

The 38-bed medical center also hospice and respite care, along with medical and surgical services.
