IRON COUNTY, MICHIGAN VETERANS TAKE OVER THEIR

OWN SERVICES -- After county dissolved local vets'

department, the veterans joined together and took over.

Here's a great lesson for all veterans:  Don't get mad, get to work.

When the county de-funded the veterans' office, the vets took over.

Good luck to them in this endeavor.

Iron County Agrees To Fund Vets

Iron County Commissioners have unanimously agreed to fund a private veterans' organization to handle all county veterans' affairs.

The decision comes after a storm of controversy erupted in June when Commissioners voted to dissolve the County Department of Veterans' Affairs, and instead appointed a volunteer to oversee the office.

That incensed many local veterans who then got organized, compiled information, drew up a budget and wrote bylaws.

"The veterans are going to govern themselves," said veteran Donald Diller, of the new arrangement. "There will be no outside interference. It's going to be up to the veterans to make or break this situation."

Under the new plan, the veterans' committee will operate as a separate entity from the County Board.

Previously, the Board controlled the veterans' day-to-day activities and expenses, either through a paid counselor or a volunteer.

Officials are hoping the new veterans' committee will move into their new county office on January 1.
