An upcoming exhibit on the Iraq war at the Wisconsin Veterans Museum poses
a challenge for its curators: how to portray a war that is still being
waged?
The state budget, passed last week, earmarked $150,000 for an exhibit on
the war called "Faces in the Sand, " which will debut in 2009, said
Richard Zeitlin, museum director. Some of the money will also go toward a
display at the National Guard Museum at Volk Field in Juneau County.

The exhibit will focus on fighting in Iraq and
Afghanistan from the perspective of Wisconsin service members, featuring
their stories, memories and equipment and including film and audio
footage, Zeitlin said. By using a "soldier 's-eye-view, " Zeitlin hopes to
avoid the pitfalls of using still-unfolding subject matter.
"We 're not going to deal with whether President Bush is right or wrong,
whether Congress is right or wrong, " he said. "I 'll let history sort out
the background and context of the Iraq war. "
But, Zeitlin said, because new information is constantly coming to light
about the war, he said organizers will use the "utmost caution " in
providing background.
"The most tricky part will be dealing with a current event, " Zeitlin
said. "There 's no perspective yet. It 's still an ongoing situation. "
This is not the first time the museum, part of the state Department of
Veterans Affairs, has presented an exhibit on the Iraq war. In 2005, the
museum sent a camera along with a local Marine Corps Reserve unit to Iraq,
Zeitlin said, then displayed the images at the museum in a small show.
"I wouldn 't say we 're avoiding controversy, " he said. "It 's not
possible to do that. The fact that it 's still going on should make it all
the more interesting to the public. "
