Vietnam Veteran finds himself in another fight

Kevin Kennedy

A 59-year-old Vietnam veteran is fighting again, but this time it's with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Laverne Schauer was notified in March that his medical benefits would be cut from $2,471 a month to $1,135.

The paperwork was provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

It lists the reason for the change as: Entitlement to individual unemployability is discontinued.

"They want me to go out and get a job, I need help just getting down the stairs." said Schauer.

The Navy Officer served 2 tours of duty in Vietnam between 1966 and 1971.

Schauer says that's where he was exposed to Agent Orange. The year after he returned Schauer was diagnosed with diabetes.

Since then Schauer has lost sight in both eyes and has trouble moving his legs.

He relies on a caretaker to take him to doctors appointments and grocery shopping.

Schauer says he contacted the VA and asked about the benefit reduction and was told, "that's my problem".

12 News contacted the VA and requested an interview but was told patient information is confidential and unless Schauer signed a release they could not discuss he matter.

When told by 12 News it could get a signed letter the spokesperson said, "we'll send you an e-mail".

The e-mail states: The VA contacted Mr. Schauer and is assisting him with his VA benefits.

Schauer says he received a full check this month but starting next month it will be cut.
