HERE'S AN EASY WAY TO EXTEND A HAND TO LOCAL VETS -

A BOOK DRIVE FOR THE VA -- We get an example from

Les Main of Baytown, Texas.

Here's a very easy way to bring a little cheer to veterans in your community.

Start a book drive.

Or, just take your old books to the VA hospital near you.

A good novel helps pass the time while waiting for an appointment.

Local man collecting books for VA hospital

By Kari Griffin
Baytown Sun

Instead of throwing unwanted novels in the dumpster, Baytonians looking to unload some of their book collection can drop their paperbacks off at Les Main’s house.

During a recent visit to the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Houston, Main noticed a shortage of reading material, especially westerns.

He said there were only three or four westerns available, and he hopes to take the injured veterans a larger selection.

Main, a member of the Department of Veterans Affairs, visits the hospital at least once or twice a month, and would like to see a larger variety of books for patients and visitors.

Some of the veterans don’t have any family, and their service to their country has been forgotten, Main said.

It’s important that these patients know that others are thinking of them, and an easy way to do that is to donate a book, he said.

Books can be dropped off at Main’s home, 401 Grantham Road.

If he is not home, they can be left next to his door.

“I’ll even pick them up,” Main said.

To donate a book, or get more information, contact Main at 281-428-1605.
