Gillett man sentenced for defrauding VA

A Gillett man was sentenced for defrauding the Department of Veteran Affairs of $355,000.

Keith Roberts, 58, was sentenced Friday to 48 months to federal prison after making false claims to suffering from post traumatic stress disorder, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Green Bay.

Roberts was convicted during a three-day jury trial in November on five counts of fraud, for collecting Veteran Affairs benefits from 1994 to 2004, the release said.

Roberts was an airman stationed at the Naval Air Facility in Naples, Italy, in 1969, the release said.

During the trial, the U.S. Department of Justice proved Roberts fabricated his role in attempting to rescue an airman who was killed and his relationship with that airman, the release said.

Roberts was discharged in 1971 and claimed the airman’s death caused the disorder.

The VA began to make monthly payments to Roberts and provided education benefits for his children, the release said.

The Veteran Affairs Office of the Inspector General in Chicago investigated the case and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, Green Bay division, prosecuted the case.
