Bradenton man gets 15 months in prison for disability fraud

HERALD STAFF REPORT

TAMPA -- A Bradenton man has been sentenced to 15 months in federal prison for defrauding the Department of Veterans Affairs and Social Security Administration of disability benefits.

Frank Hagaman, 60, must also repay the federal government $176,586 he earned from his scheme, according to a news release from the U.S. attorney's office in Tampa.

According to court documents, during a five-year period Hagaman applied for and received veterans and Social Security benefits by claiming he was too disabled to work.

However, during that time Hagaman was performing work for his landscaping business, according to the news release.

Hagaman, who in March pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud, concealed his income and work activity by submitting false and fraudulent documents to the Department of Veterans Affairs and Social Security Administration, and using his wife and son to receive the payments for his work, according to the news release.

Hagaman was sentenced Thursday by U.S. District Judge Susan C. Bucklew.

The case was investigated by the inspector generals for the two federal agencies, and by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
