Security Concerns Lead to VFW Sitting Out Parade

CLEAR LAKE, IOWA

There's another controversy surrounding the Clear Lake parade, and it's not about who was in it but who was left out.

Members of the Mason City VFW did not march in the Clear Lake Independence Day parade because they were not allowed to fire blank rounds from their rifles.

According to the parade chairman, the Secret Service wouldn't allow any firearms in the parade for the security of Senator Hillary Clinton and former president Bill Clinton.

After a vote between the 13 members of the VFW post 7-33, the majority refused to march this year.

Parade Chairman Ric Jacobs says, "this is something they always did. They said it was a crowd pleaser, but for one year, I hate to see it, but I think we can do without the guns."

The VFW quartermaster told the Mason City Globe-Gazette "They're making us change 50-years of tradition for two people. It's not political. We're just trying to make a point."
