Maine Handicapped Skiing hosts eighteen
veterans with disabilities at 2nd annual Veterans/No Boundaries program
at Sunday River
Braving chilling temperatures and arctic winds, eighteen veterans hit
the slopes and trails at Sunday River Ski Resort and the Sunday River
Inn and Cross Country Ski Center Monday, February 5th through Wednesday,
February 7th at Maine Handicapped Skiing’s 2nd annual Veterans/No
Boundaries program.
The program, first introduced by Maine Handicapped Skiing in the winter
of 2006, provides winter sports lessons free of charge to any veteran
with a physical disability who needs adaptive equipment or techniques to
participate in winter recreation. Veterans and their spouses or
significant others were treated to three delicious meals a day, many of
which were donated by Bethel businesses, Bethel and Locke Mills American
Legion Posts, the Parrot Head Club of Maine and MHS volunteers and
staff. Discounted lodging was provided by Sunday River Ski Resort and as
always, Sunday River and the Sunday River Cross Country Ski Center
supported the Maine Handicapped Skiing program through donated lift
tickets and trail passes.
The veterans represented almost all the military services including the
Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. They came from Maine, Massachusetts
and New Hampshire and New York State. Some of the veterans had
participated in MHS’s regular winter programs and others came through
Maine Handicapped Skiing outreach activities to veterans’ organizations
throughout New England.
Joanne McMahon of Brunswick, Maine, Commander US Navy Retired, MHS board
member and a Veterans/No Boundaries committee member, has for two years,
witnessed veterans returning to winter recreation with great joy. “The
program has made an incredible difference in the lives of so many
veterans. I hear all the time how people thought they would never be
able to ski, snowboard or snowshoe again.” Cdr. McMahon spoke to
numerous veterans at the Veterans/No Boundaries program and learned of
the profound impact it has had on their lives, not just learning to ski
but in every other aspect of their daily living. “What we do here at
Maine Handicapped Skiing is to give people confidence to do things in
their lives that they thought they couldn’t do anymore because of an
injury or disability. MHS make a real difference in people’s lives.”
