American Legion Post shut down after year long
drug investigation
Local News
FORT MYERS: American Legion Post 192 in Fort Myers has been shut down and
its operator arrested after a year long drug investigation.
Police say drug dealers were able to freely operate on the property and
undercover investigators even arranged a party at the post where narcotics
and weapons were allowed by management.
Charles Henry, 58, is charged with leasing or renting a structure for the
purpose of sale of a controlled substance and maintaining a place for the
purpose of unlawfully using any controlled substances. Henry is the
operator of Post 192.
Police are also looking for Gregory Gilmore. He is wanted for selling
illegal drugs within the American Legion.

The investigation began back in January of this
year when Fort Myers Police received information that numerous people,
including employees and patrons, were selling illegal drugs inside Post
192.
During the year long investigation confidential informants and undercover
officers purchased illegal narcotics from eight people within American
Legion Post 192.
Investigators say they also arranged to have a party at Post 192 in which
Henry allegedly gave them permission to use drugs and carry weapons on the
property.
In addition detectives claim that Henry allowed and observed a drug
transaction between undercover officers inside his establishment.
Chief Hilton Daniels says over the past 10 years American Legion Post 192
has been a hub for crime in the City of Fort Myers with five murders and
more than 1,200 calls for police service.
"We are extremely disappointed that a local business associated with
veterans would participate or allow violent crime on their property. This
in no way is a negative reflection to other American Legion Posts across
the nation. We believe this is an isolated incident within the management
of Post 192," Chief Daniels in a statement released to the media.
Authorities say the investigation, which also includes the Florida Bureau
of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, is ongoing and Chief Daniels vows to
continue to crack down on and individuals and businesses that are involved
in violent crime.
"Suppression of violent crime is not just the responsibility of the police
department, residents and businesses must take an active role in providing
a safe environment for the people who live and work in our community,"
said Chief Daniels.
