------------------------- The only things missing at the Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs hearing were incense and soft lighting. It was truly a "lovefest" as the Committee took on the confirmation of Dr. James Peake as VA Secretary. But, we saw this coming. The AP first published a story indicating that
Peake's confirmation was a done deal. That story here... The hearing just confirmed the story.
Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) called Peake "our new Secretary." Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) said to Peake, "Thank you for taking this job." Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) said, "I am likely to confirm your nomination..." This hearing was carefully-scripted and did not vary from that script. The Committee had six good reasons not to confirm
Dr. James Peake...story here... Instead of asking hard questions, they just lobbed a few softballs. Questions carefully skirted the main issues and
fell into line with Peake's pre-written disclosure statement to the
Committee...story here... What a terrible disappointment. Veterans can look forward to another year of "more of the same" from another political hack.
